Ferrari breaks tradition with the SF90 XX Stradale and SF90 XX Spider, allowing customers to experience the power of these models on public roads. While previous XX models were limited to the track, these newly unveiled vehicles are more accessible. Ferrari maintains their exclusivity by producing only 799 hardtops and 599 convertible versions.
Both the SF90 XX Stradale and SF90 XX Spider retain the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine, complemented by three electric motors: two for the front axle and one placed between the engine and transmission. The power output has been increased to an impressive total of 1,016 horsepower, surpassing the standard SF90 Stradale’s 986 hp.
The V8 engine in the SF90 XX Stradale delivers an impressive 786 horsepower (586 kilowatts), a notable improvement from the previous iteration’s 769 horsepower (573 kW). The engine incorporates various enhancements, including new pistons, specialized machining of the combustion chamber, and polished inlet and exhaust ducts.
To enhance the cabin experience, the intake plenum tube has been positioned closer to the cabin bulkhead, allowing more of the engine’s sound to resonate inside. Furthermore, the elimination of the secondary air system has resulted in a weight reduction of 7.72 pounds (3.5 kilograms).
The electric motors in both models have been upgraded, resulting in a combined power output of 229 hp (171 kW), compared to the previous iteration’s 217 hp (162 kW). The battery capacity remains unchanged at 7.9 kilowatt-hours. When operating in electric mode, the range remains at 15.53 miles (25 kilometers), and the top speed remains unchanged at 84 mph (135 kph).
In the Qualifying driving mode, the SF90 XX introduces a new extra boost function enabled by the electric motors. This feature enhances power delivery when exiting corners, resulting in improved performance.
Ferrari asserts that this function reduces lap times at the Fiorano circuit by approximately 0.25 seconds. The battery has ample capacity to provide up to 30 of these power surges.
The SF90 XX retains its eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox, which has been updated with revised software. One notable addition is the inclusion of a sound that resembles the exhaust note when decelerating at high RPMs, which accompanies gear changes.
Both the SF90 XX Stradale and SF90 XX Spider exhibit impressive acceleration, reaching 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) in just 2.3 seconds. Additionally, they share the same top speed of 199 mph (320 kph).
Enhancements have been made to the braking system of the SF90 XX Stradale. The front calipers have been redesigned for improved cooling, resulting in enhanced braking performance.
Additionally, the rear rotors have been enlarged from 360 millimeters to 390 millimeters. To optimize braking distribution, a new ABS EVO controller works in conjunction with the 6W-CDS sensor, which estimates the vehicle’s speed and calculates the appropriate braking force distribution.
Ferrari has made visual enhancements to the SF90 XX Stradale, giving it a more aggressive appearance compared to the standard model (see comparison above). The front end features a larger splitter, which guides airflow underneath the car to enhance aerodynamics.
The redesigned underbody further aids in channeling the airflow. Ferrari states that at a speed of 155 mph (250 km/h), the SF90 XX Stradale generates over 99 pounds (45 kg) of additional downforce compared to the regular model.
Ferrari enhances the aero elements of the SF90 XX by introducing more sophisticated features. In addition to the existing wide hood outlet, the vehicle now includes a pair of ducts on each side of the nose, as well as two additional ducts near the center. Furthermore, three gills are present on each front fender, contributing to the overall aerodynamic performance of the car.
The rear end of the vehicle also undergoes significant revisions. Positioned just behind the roof, there are now two inlets on the engine cover. The openings in the fenders have been updated, and three gills are now located directly behind them, further enhancing the aerodynamic profile of the car.
At the rear of the vehicle, Ferrari incorporates a fixed wing, marking the first road-legal model since the F50 to feature it as a standard factory component. Collectively, these body modifications generate a substantial downforce of 1,168 pounds (530 kilograms) at a speed of 155 mph (250 kph).
The interior updates in the SF90 XX are relatively modest. It boasts an Alcantara dashboard and an abundance of carbon-fiber accents. The gearshift selector has been moved forward, and the seats feature a unified design with elastic trim connecting the upper and lower sections, allowing occupants to adjust the backrest.
The SF90 XX Spider closely resembles the SF90 XX Stradale, with the key difference being its retractable roof, which can open in just 14 seconds. As a result of the convertible design, certain inlets found on the rear deck of the coupe version are omitted in the Spider variant.
