As part of its lineup refresh, Mazda is expanding its range of crossovers with the upcoming CX-80. Set to launch later this year, the CX-80 is a three-row variant based on the CX-60. Recently, spy photographers captured the vehicle undergoing testing, covered in a full-body camouflage wrap.
Despite the concealed design details, the camouflage cannot hide the resemblance to the CX-60 in terms of styling. Anticipated features of the CX-80 include a sizable and clean grille, slender headlights, and an appealing rear design.
The anticipated similarities between the CX-80 and CX-60 are expected to extend to the interior, where the CX-80 is likely to feature 12.3-inch screens for both the digital instrument cluster and infotainment display, along with wood trim. It is unlikely that there will be a significant difference in layout between the two models.
The CX-80 is expected to continue the shared characteristics with the CX-60, including the powertrain lineup. Similar to its smaller counterpart, the CX-80 is likely to offer a 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid engine that combines an electric motor with a lithium-ion battery pack. This configuration delivers 323 horsepower, 369 pound-feet of torque, and enables an electric-only driving range of up to 42 miles.
In addition to hybrid options, Mazda is expected to provide non-hybrid engine choices for the CX-80. Potential options may include a 3.0-liter straight-six engine and a 3.3-liter straight-six diesel engine, capable of generating up to 251 horsepower and 404 lb-ft of torque.
The automaker may also introduce a plug-in hybrid variant, although the availability of specific powertrain options could vary depending on the market.
At first glance, the CX-80 bears a striking resemblance to its smaller counterpart. However, upon closer examination, one can spot several styling adjustments made to accommodate the additional row of seats.
Notably, there is more sheet metal present behind the rear doors, particularly noticeable around the fuel door area. Additionally, the test vehicle showcases larger rear quarter windows, distinguishing it from the CX-60’s glass design.
While Mazda has not announced an official unveiling date for the CX-80, it has confirmed that the vehicle will be revealed in Europe before the end of the year. The CX-80 is planned for sale in various markets, including Japan.
However, it remains uncertain whether the model will be introduced in the United States, as Mazda recently launched the three-row CX-90 in that market. Furthermore, a smaller variant called the CX-70, featuring two rows of seats, is expected to debut in the US by the end of 2023.
