After his father underwent surgery to remove a rare tumor the size of a rugby ball near his spine, a man is now preparing for a 15km charity run.

On 1 August, Arjan Dayal, 18, will embrace the fundraising challenge at Victoria Park in Leicester.

Hardip Dayal, Arjan’s father, was diagnosed with a Solitary Fibrous Tumour in 2019 and faced a recurrence in January this year.

Arjan is raising funds for the hospital charity that assisted in his father’s recovery. Hardip, aged 45, received a diagnosis of Solitary Fibrous Tumour in February 2019.

The tumor, a rare type that can develop in various body parts, was located near his spine and measured approximately the size of a rugby ball.

He was referred to the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) in Stanmore, London, where he underwent surgery to remove the tumor and then underwent six months of MRI scans for monitoring.

In January, a scan revealed the presence of another tumor in his vertebral column.

In April, he underwent a demanding 16-hour operation to remove the second tumor and reconstruct his vertebrae, displaying remarkable resilience. Arjan conveyed, “Dad has endured a lot with his health in the past few years.”

“He is making steady progress in his recovery, gaining strength each day. However, there is still a possibility that full mobility, sensation, and strength may not fully return. We will have to observe how he progresses.”

Arjan was deeply impressed by the facilities at the RNOH, inspiring him to embark on the challenge of raising £1,000 for its charity.

He expressed his enthusiasm for participating in the sponsored run, stating, “I’m excited about it.” Despite being generally fit, he acknowledged that he had to train a bit more specifically for this event since he had never run 15km continuously before.

The story of “Son to run 15km in Leicester after father has rare tumor removed” revolves around Arjan Dayal, an 18-year-old man, who is taking on a fundraising challenge to run a 15-kilometer charity race in Victoria Park, Leicester.

His motivation for this run stems from his father, Hardip Dayal, who was diagnosed with a Solitary Fibrous Tumour, a rare type of tumor, near his spine in February 2019.

Hardip underwent surgery to have the tumor removed and underwent six months of MRI scans for follow-up. Unfortunately, in January of another year, a scan detected the presence of a second tumor in his vertebral column.

This prompted a grueling 16-hour operation in April, during which the tumor was removed, and his vertebrae were reconstructed.

Throughout this challenging period, Arjan’s father has been battling with his health. In light of the exceptional care and support they received from the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) in Stanmore, London, Arjan decided to raise funds for the hospital’s charity.

He aims to raise £1,000 for the RNOH charity as a gesture of appreciation for their services.

Arjan shared his excitement about participating in the sponsored run, stating that though he keeps himself quite fit, he had to train a bit more for this specific 15km race.

He also expressed his wish for his father to be present, along with other family members and friends, to witness some of his efforts during the run. The funds raised through this charity run will contribute to supporting the hospital’s ongoing endeavors and the care they provide to patients like Hardip Dayal.
